THE GAME FORMAT
🏓 Team Relay Medley Format – Pickleball Team Tournament
🔸 Team Composition
- Each team consists of 9 players.
- Teams must nominate their player sequence before the start of each tie.
- Once the sequence is locked, no substitutions or resequencing are allowed during that tie.
- Every player must feature at least once before the sequence can repeat.
🔸 Tie Format – “Race to 41”
Each tie between two teams is played as a continuous relay race to 41 total points.
Sequence of Play
Segment | Format | Points | Description |
1 | Doubles | 12 | First doubles pair plays until the total points on the board = 12 |
2 | Singles | 8 | Second pair plays until total points = 20 |
3 | Doubles | 14 | Third pair plays until total points = 34 |
4 | Doubles | 8 | Singles players continue until total = 42 |
5 | Doubles | 10 | Final doubles pair plays up to total = 52 (or ends earlier if a team reaches 41) |
🟢 The relay ends immediately when one team reaches 41 points, regardless of the current segment.
🔄 If neither team reaches 41 after completing all five segments, the sequence restarts from Segment 1 and continues in the same order.
🔁 When the combined total of both teams’ scores equals 40, teams switch sides.
🔸 Referee App Integration
- The referee uses a mobile app to track points in real time.
- The app will:
- Display the active players for the current segment.
- Notify when it’s time to change players.
- Signal when teams must switch sides (at 40 total points).
- Announce when a team reaches 41 to end the relay.
- The app automatically records each team’s final score for that tie and adds it to the overall team total.
🔸 Sample Player Nomination Sheet
Segment | Format | Team A Players | Team B Players |
1 | Doubles (12 pts) | A1 & A2 | B1 & B2 |
2 | Singles (8 pts) | A3 | B3 |
3 | Doubles (14 pts) | A4 & A5 | B4 & B5 |
4 | Doubles (8 pts) | A6 & A7 | B6 & B7 |
5 | Doubles (10 pts) | A8 & A9 | B8 & B9 |
📝 If no team reaches 41, restart from Segment 1 with the same order.
🔸 Tournament Scoring & Standings
- Each team will play against every other team once.
- There are no win/loss points — the actual points scored in every relay are added cumulatively.
- The team with the highest total cumulative score at the end of all ties is declared the tournament champion.
- In case of a tie in total points, the head-to-head result between the tied teams decides the rank.
